The UK-to-Israel lens

Leaving Britain is a separate workstream

1

Tell the relevant UK bodies about your move, including HMRC and any office handling benefits, pensions or student loans.

2

Close, retain or change each UK account deliberately and protect access to UK authentication and post.

3

Carry essential originals, medication and arrival details in hand luggage; do not put the only copy in shipping.

The short version

Three things to keep in view

1

Tax residence is determined by facts and law—not by a one-off declaration.

2

Decide which UK accounts, property, pensions and legal arrangements will continue after the move.

3

Carry essential documents, medication and arrival information rather than shipping them.

01

Ninety days or more before departure

  • Build a departure register covering HMRC, National Insurance, pensions, employer or business, housing and insurance.
  • Request medical summaries, repeat-prescription information and children’s school or support records.
  • Check passport, application and travel-document instructions for every traveller.
  • Plan shipping, storage, pets and temporary accommodation with contingency time.
  • Review wills, powers of attorney and who can act on UK matters after you leave.
02

Tax, work and retained UK interests

A move does not by itself settle UK tax residence or remove UK tax obligations. UK property income, employment, companies, investment activity and return visits can remain relevant.

  • Confirm how to notify HM Revenue & Customs for your circumstances; Self Assessment users may follow a different route from P85 users.
  • Record the departure date, work pattern, UK days, homes and ties needed for residence analysis.
  • Tell an employer where duties will physically be performed and obtain cross-border payroll and tax advice where needed.
  • If retaining UK property or a business interest, plan management, banking, insurance and tax reporting.

Obtain UK and Israeli tax advice before relying on a residence, payroll or double-tax position.

03

Home, accounts and services

  • Give your council a forwarding address and settle Council Tax or tenancy questions.
  • Close or transfer utilities, broadband, mobile contracts and subscriptions deliberately.
  • Ask banks, card providers, lenders and insurers whether they support customers resident in Israel.
  • Arrange secure mail handling and update only verified organisations.
  • Keep a list of direct debits, standing orders, deposits and expected refunds.
04

Health, education and family records

  • Ask your general practitioner and relevant clinicians for concise records needed for continuity of care.
  • Carry an adequate lawful supply of medication, prescriptions and generic drug names after professional advice.
  • Collect school reports, assessment plans, vaccination information and evidence of additional support.
  • Arrange dentist, optician and specialist follow-up according to clinical advice.
  • Do not assume continuing entitlement to NHS services after becoming ordinarily resident abroad.
05

Final week and hand luggage

  • Passports, visas or approval documents and the arrival instructions for every traveller.
  • Original civil-status and eligibility documents in a protected folder.
  • Medication, prescriptions, clinical summary and essential equipment.
  • Arrival address, emergency contacts, bank access and more than one payment method.
  • Chargers, adapters, change of clothes and items children need for the journey.
  • Encrypted digital copies stored separately from the originals.

Check live FCDO advice, airline rules and official arrival instructions immediately before travelling.
