The short version
Three things to keep in view
Plan each child’s transition separately rather than treating the family as one timetable.
Bring education, health and custody evidence that could affect services or travel.
Build social and emotional support into the move—not only school registration.
Preparing children emotionally
- Explain what is decided, what remains uncertain and when the child will hear more.
- Let children ask difficult questions without requiring excitement.
- Create age-appropriate ways to say goodbye and maintain UK relationships.
- Keep familiar objects, routines and accessible support during temporary housing.
- Watch for distress and seek qualified support when needed.
Babies and young children
- Map childcare availability, hours, cost and registration in the target area.
- Carry health, vaccination, allergy and feeding information.
- Plan safe sleep, car seats, nappies, formula or other essentials through the travel period.
- Ask how child-health monitoring and prescriptions transfer into the health fund.
School-age children and teenagers
- Bring reports, subject detail, exam records and support plans.
- Discuss Hebrew, year-group placement, GCSE or A-level timing and future study routes.
- Research youth groups, sports, arts and English-language continuity.
- Give teenagers meaningful input into community and school comparisons.
- Plan safe independent travel and communication.
Custody, consent and family status
Children travelling or moving across borders can raise parental-responsibility, custody, consent and documentation issues. These must be resolved before travel through the appropriate official and legal routes.
Obtain specialist legal advice where parents disagree, orders exist, a parent is not travelling or family-status documents are complex.
Your first months as a family
- Prioritise health access, school or childcare, sleep and a manageable weekly routine.
- Meet the school adviser and explain strengths as well as support needs.
- Schedule one-to-one time with each child.
- Review whether the chosen home and commute still work after real experience.
